The race to dominate the AI assistant market by companies like Apple, Google, Samsung is quite well known, eyeing the opportunity Facebook doesn’t want to get left behind either. After the acquisition of speech based AI startup Wit.ai, Facebook has been actively working on getting their own version of Artificial Intelligence based personal assistant. But, it lives inside your messenger app, getting things done for you. After hiring Paypal’s VP David Marcus, to work on the messenger platform actively, there have been interesting changes and additions to the platform. Marcus in his Facebook post announced that they were working on a virtual assistant named “M”
Today we’re beginning to test a new service called M, a personal digital assistant inside of Messenger that completes tasks and finds information on your behalf. It’s powered by artificial intelligence that’s trained and supervised by people.
He also mentioned that unlike other AI-based services in the market, M can complete tasks on your behalf, instead of just searching items online and suggesting you information. It would go to the extent of booking tickets for movies, booking at table at restaurants, buying gifts for your loved ones, fix appointments with your dentist and other things.
It is still under development and can take several months to completely roll out to the audience. This would make it a sophisticated system, made available to the consumer so far.
We wonder what its future applications could be, in terms of IoT and payments, where it is possible to carry out and to connect everything around us.
We’ll keep you posted on more updates. If you have anything to add, Let me know what you think in the comments.
